A former Sweetwater commissioner has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud, court records show.

Sophia Lacayo will also serve three years of supervised release after leaving prison, according to the court judgment filed Monday.
According to court records, authorities said Lacayo used multiple companies to fraudulently obtain four Paycheck Protection Program loans totaling more than $948,000 after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Lacayo resigned from her post in Sweetwater in 2019 after she pled guilty to a perjury charge after authorities said she lied about where she lived when running for office.

She also is currently facing 2023 state campaign-related criminal charges arising from her unsuccessful 2022 bid for a Miami-Dade County Commission seat.
Lacayo was scheduled to surrender to federal authorities on June 10 to begin serving her sentence.
