Police are investigating after a man drowned in a canal in Hialeah Thursday morning.

The incident happened in the area of West 12th Avenue and West 44th Place.

Hialeah Police said two men were sitting on the edge of the canal when one of them fell in the water.

The friend jumped in to rescue him but couldn’t pull him out and struggled to get him to the canal’s edge, police said.

Police said the friend got out to ask someone for help as the victim started floating away in the canal.

A passerby jumped into the canal to help and was able to pull the victim to the canal bank, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The victim’s identity hasn’t been released. An investigation was ongoing.
