As it was her first time casting for Swim Week, Aimee Albright kept it simple when it came to making her comp card, which acts as a model’s business card.

“I made my comp card myself,” she said. “I took some photos against a white wall, kept it really simple. I made a little template on Canva, popped the photos in and got it printed at FedEx.”

Once models are ready to get into a show, they’ll take their comp cards, black swimsuits, heels and go to a casting.

Flight attendant Ahliyah Williams used her resources to find casting calls near her.

“So there’s a lot of casting calls going out on Instagram, so I kinda just searched around,” she said.

Though some may argue that vanity is the main factor in whether a model is booked or not, Belle D’amore representative Isabelle Sedghi clarifies what exactly the je ne sais quoi is that directors and designers are looking for.

“We’re looking for someone who’s always themselves because it shows right away someone who has energy is magnetic, someone who just owns the runway when you’re out there just kinda catches the crowd, makes the crowd stop and say, wow,” Sedghi said.

Male model Hayden Jones says it’s confidence and physique.

“You just gotta come with confidence,” he said. “Look your best, make sure your physique is right, your health is right, you’re working out every day, just getting ready, just coming out there with pure confidence.”

Although any model could show up to a casting dressed correctly with the right materials and a phenomenal walk, it doesn’t always mean there will be a spot for them on the runway.

Eric Roese, president of Art Hearts Fashion, says that even if a model was rejected by his production in the past, they should try again.

“So what I tell models to do is to come to all of our castings no matter what,” he said. “If they were rejected the season before, you never know who will be here this season, and you never know what the designer might want this season. It might be different from the last season.”

Art Hearts Fashion will be showcasing through Sunday at different venues in the city. For more information on where to find shows and buy tickets, visit artheartsfashion.com.
